notes from William L Fielder:
The barn would have been a way back behind her flower garden. I had a "fort" built there that to my dismay my sisters turned into a play house!!!! With Aunt Lillian's help!! There had been a vegetable garden behind the house, but I never saw alot growing there.
The chicken coup was down a path through the weeds behind the barn, I think. I loved to help her gather the eggs on occasion. In late 1962 & early 1963 my family lived in Martinsville, Indiana, and we took all of the chickens to our house, WOW! How do I remember the stench of those chickens in the crates IN OUR car and on top of it. I HATE that smell to this day. It was a stormy night and the windows had to be closed. What torture!
Aunt Lillian's house had an outhouse out the kitchen door and back a way, and I was scared to go there by myself. There was no light in there.
I remember getting chiggers and there was nothing to put on them, Aunt Lillian gave me bacon grease to rub on them. I think she ran out of bacon grease. OH, and just so you know, it did not work. I about died with that itch. In the evenings she taught me to crochet rag rugs. She made a big oval one and I made a small round one. I became quite good at it as did my sisters. She also took Readers Digest magazines and turn them into little round houses, painted and decorated them.
