* Per Rolla's son and wife (Clifford Trowbridge and Margaret (Martindale) Trowbridge): Rolla lost his left hand at the young age of 18 in Olney, IL long before he met Zelpha in Arkansas. He was with a group of young people doing whatever it was they did back then. A couple of their friends got married, shot a shotgun into the air, the gun barrel split open and fragments tore into his hand. A few days later he contracted blood poisoning and the hand was amputated in the Olney, IL hospital. He never stopped using guns. He was an avid hunter, and he continued to hunt in the woods behind their home in Newark. The fact that he had lost his left hand just became commonplace with all of us and actually was never mentioned even in conversation. The accident impacted his life dramatically. He was brilliant, but due to being physically handicapped (no disability benefits at that time!) his earning power was limited throughout his life. He studied and became a well respected minister in Greene Co, IN.
